Newcastle United fans greeted by police escort and taunt Sunderland fans with chants about Netflix documentary as they arrive for Checkatrade Trophy clash
Newcastle United fans required a police escort as the Toon Army descended upon Sunderland for the Checkatrade Trophy clash at the Stadium of Light.Despite it being only the Under-21’s getting a run out, 2,800 Magpies supporters arrived at Sunderland station with a police escort.2,800 Newcastle fans packed into the Stadium of Light (image courtesy of @GallowgateShots)1

In the video below (posted to Twitter by Martin Page), the Geordies can be seen arriving at the train station in tremendous numbers and with a repertoire of songs at their arsenal. The game itself did not go to plan for Ben Dawson’s side as Sunderland claimed the bragging rights from the Tyne-Wear derby with an emphatic 4-0 win.Four second half goals may have dumped Newcastle out of the competition, but the fans remained in great voice throughout the game. One song which left plenty of fans in fits of laughter was ‘We saw you cry on Netflix’ – a reference to Sunderland’s now infamous ‘Sunderland Til I Die’ documentary. A camera crew filmed the managers, fans and players in the city throughout the entirety of the 2017-18 season as the club battled to avoid a successive relegation into League One.While it may be some time before we see these great rivals compete on a regular basis in a league game, it is clear to see the passion is still very much burning.
