A Manchester United fan stabbed in the wake of Wednesday’s Champions League defeat of Paris Saint-Germain is recovering in hospital.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to knock the French champions out of the competition on away goals with a 3-1 win at the Parc des Princes.Manchester United secured an historic win to book their place in the quarter-finals1

The Foreign Office confirmed it was in contact with French authorities.A spokesman said: “We are in touch with the French authorities following an incident involving a British man in Paris on March 6 and stand ready to offer assistance if required.”The man was travelling in a taxi before being taken to hospital in the French capital and underwent emergency surgery.It is understood the fan is recovering and could be out of hospital by Monday.A Manchester United spokesperson said: “We were shocked to hear about the incident with one of our fans who was stabbed while in Paris for the Champions League game. “Everyone at the club wishes him well during his recovery.”This is the latest in a series of violent incidents which have taken place around Champions League matches involving English teams.A Liverpool supporter, Sean Cox, was left in a coma after being seriously injured ahead of a tie against Roma last April, while a Manchester City fan was assaulted after his side’s match against Schalke earlier this year.Simone Mastrelli, from Rome, was last month jailed for three-and-a-half years for his attack on Mr Cox.
