A referee has received a 154-day ban from football for failing to report cards he awarded during a match.Ryan Ansell has described his punishment as “inconsistent” with bans issued to abusive players. He told talkSPORT: “I’ve known players to get less for violent conduct and hitting referees.”A ref has been given a lengthy ban for failing to report yellow cards1

After officiating a game in the Birmingham AFA league Mr Ansell reported three yellow cards to the league but did not notify the FA.“The reason is because I work 60 hours a week. So I literally forgot to do it”, he said. This week a letter arrived from Birmingham County FA informing him of the ban and issuing him a 55 fine. “I was a bit shocked. It’s not just from reffing”, he added. “It’s from all football, so I can’t even go and play for a Sunday league team in Tamworth I’m registered with.”Birmingham County FA told talkSPORT: “The responsibility to report all incidents during matches…is an imperative, which helps to protect players and referees and bans players for their actions.”Mr Ansell points to the following incident as evidence of unfair treatment…The incident above, which saw a referee assaulted, resulted in a 142-day ban for the player: 12 fewer days than Mr Ansell’s punishment. It occurred during a match between Cockfosters F.C. and Oxhey Jets F.C. in the South Midlands Football League in October 2018.Ref Support UK have indicated they will pay the 50 fee required for Mr Ansell to appeal.

Birmingham County FA added: “Ryan’s suspension is as per FA guidelines and based on the severity of the case.”It also said the lack of football over the summer had increased the length of the ban, in order that it carried over into next season. But Mr Ansell said he would quit refereeing.“I don’t need it. I do it because I enjoy it, but I could be spending the whole day with my girlfriend.”
